What is the Miele Complete C3 Cat & Dog?

Miele pretty much invented the pet-specific vacuum cleaner, and its Cat & Dog models have been cleaning up after pets for well over a decade. With the EU’s limit on vacuum cleaner power consumption now in force, the Complete C3 Cat & Dog Powerline comes in at a frugal 1200W, adding a rotating Turbobrush and new high-flow AirTeQ floorhead to lift pet hairs where previous models went for brute suction force.

Miele Active AirClean filter has been designed specifically to help absorb pet related odours, and there is a colour strip to let you know when the filter needs changing. The C3 Cat & Dog uses self-sealing HyClean bags, comes with a range of on-board accessories, electronic controls and a substantial 11m cleaning radius. With our Labrador, Poppy, fresh from a dip in the local duck pond compete with mud, moulting hairs and a piquant odour, we set about ‘animal testing’ the C3 Cat & Dog. It passed with flying colours.

Miele Complete C3 Cat & Dog – Accessories

Miele’s marketing department got a bit carried away with long names for the C3 range, so let’s just refer to this model as the C3 Cat & Dog. Like the C3 Total Solution, this is a light, compact and solidly built cylinder cleaner with a 4.5-litre bag capacity. There are three tools on-board under the top cover, an upholstery nozzle, dusting brush and crevice tool, and two floorheads supplied. The first is the Turbobrush head, which while labelled Cat & Dog is identical to the Turbobrush supplied with the Total Solution model. The air-flow powered brush has variable speed thanks to a slide vent on top.

The Miele AirTeQ head is a direct result of new power regulations and has been designed to allow the fastest and most efficient flow of air to give the same suction power as an older 2000W vacuum with a more traditional head. It’s light and flexible, thanks to an all-way pivoting neck, and its drop-down hard floor brushes make it really effective on a range of surfaces.

The brushes have only very small cut-outs for air flow to stop the head sticking through suction to the ground. Yet in use this head glides around on hard surfaces like it’s on wheels, drawing in dust, dirt and pet hairs with ease.

The AirTeQ head’s impressive suction shows on carpets. In fact, on short pile surfaces and the high power setting, the head limpets itself on to the carpet, requiring a very firm hand to move. We reduced the power to make life easier and there is a suction release vent on the handle, which has the same effect. While this does demonstrate this floorhead’s suction efficiency, the Turbohead is simply easier and more effective on carpet.

On full power the Turbohead brush spins very fast indeed to give the carpet plenty of agitation to loosen dirt. The sliding vent switch is useful if you need to reduce the suction pressure a little, perhaps on rugs that may move or pull up, but we preferred the higher suction with the vent closed.

The brush is air-powered, so it does slow down when you hit deep pile carpets, but never enough to significantly reduce cleaning efficiency. The head moves around easily on most carpets and is not too noisy either, at 79dB. With the AirTeQ head this falls further to 77dB, and it can be quieter still if you reduce power below maximum.

We would probably use the Turbohead for carpets and the AirTeQ head for hard floors almost exclusively as these surfaces see each at their best. So on our carpet test, liberally covered with carpet freshener powder, the Turbohead did an exceptionally good job of picking up the dust and a few stray pet hairs in the regulation three passes. Its close to edge cleaning was also exceptional, with little or no powder showing against the skirting board.

With the C3 Powerline models weighing in at less than 5.5kg, the C3 Cat & Dog is easy to carry up and down stairs with its nice balance and chunky handle. It sits well on individual steps as long as care is taken not to knock it over by pulling the hose or cable. The good hose reach and telescopic tubes mean we could get to half a flight of domestic stairs from the top and the other half from the bottom, so covering the entire flight without needing to place the cleaner on steps.

The Turbobrush head was our chosen weapon of choice for our carpeted stars, although its size did stop it getting into tighter corners on bends in the stairs. For this we resorted to the lightweight upholstery tool, which while not as effective at grabbing pet hairs was great for getting into nooks and crannies.

On hard floors with drifting pet hairs, the AirTeQ head does a great job of pulling in the detritus. The smaller vents in the sides of the bristles do mean some hairs stick to the brush parts as you sweep, but the suction is strong enough to keep them there, and even draw them into the head if you ‘lift’ slightly.

Yet the main tool here is the Turbobrush head as this lifts pet-hairs off of carpets and upholstery with consummate ease. It cleaned our standard test patch with mixed Collie and Labrador hair in 12 seconds and did a great job on the sofa, rug and the dog’s beds. All the while the C3 Cat & Dogs emits a faintly perfumed odour, which is a whole lot better than ‘eau d’soggy Lab’.

This was most noticeable when we switched back to our workhorse Numatic Henry for these duties, which seem to amplify the smell over the heat of its motor.

Should I buy the Miele C3 Cat & Dog?

If you’ve had enough of stubborn pet hairs and doggy smells, the C3 Cat & Dog has to be near the top of your list. While other models with Turboheads do an equally good job of collecting furry debris, the way it quells pet odour is a useful extra. It’s also built to last, has well thought out features and superb hard floor cleaning with the AirTeQ head, while the 4.5-litre capacity is ample.

The best alternatives, assuming you want a cylinder vacuum cleaner, are the Dyson DC54 Animal and the Miele’s own C3 Total Solution Allergy PowerLine. The Dyson is even more efficient at cleaning pet hairs – it completed our pet hair test in just three seconds – and comes with the awesome tangle-free pet hair handheld tool, but then it costs a fair amount more. The C3 Total Solution cleans as well as the Cat & Dog, but substitutes the pet odour zapping in favour of improved dust filtration for allergy sufferers. Any of the three would serve you well, but the C3 Cat & Dog is the cheapest.

What is the Miele Compact C2 Cat & Dog Powerline?

Models in Miele’s Compact C2 range are smaller, lighter siblings of the C3 models. This Cat & Dog version weighs in at under 5kg, includes a Turbobrush head that’s ideal for picking up pet hairs and is fitted with an air filter with activated charcoal to keep unpleasant odours at bay. It’s not large enough for on-board storage, but it compensates with a handle mounted holster for the three detailing tools as well as a side clamp to store the telescopic metal tubes upright.

The key point you need to know, however, is that the Miele Compact C2 cleans just as well as Miele’s larger vacuum cleaners, and that’s great news because they’re great, too. If you want a bagged cylinder vacuum cleaner that won’t take up too much space, the Compact C2 Cat & Dog is a great option.

Miele Compact C2 Cat & Dog Powerline – Accessories

We are never disappointed with Miele’s selection and quality of tools and the Compact C2 has plenty to offer. In addition to the long flexible hose and telescopic metal tubes, this model stores its crevice tool, dusting brush and an upholstery tool on a clip conveniently placed on the tube handle (see above).

Both main floorheads, the AirTeQ and the Turbobrush, are solidly made and well designed. The AirTeQ optimises airflow to improve suction efficiency, claiming the same performance of a traditional floorhead and a 2000W cleaner. The Turbobrush has an air-powered rotating brush bar to pick up stubborn grime and agitate dust from carpets.

Miele’s AirTeQ floorhead is much smarter than its rather mundane function might suggest. Not only has the internal design been ‘gas-flowed’ to improve airflow, and hence suction efficiency, the base of the unit has been sculpted to give maximum suction and minimum stick-down. That said, with the Compact C2 on full power you can still feel the suction trying to pin the AirTeQ head to the carpet, but never so tight you cannot move it.

We found this head ideal for scooting around hard floors in particular, effectively picking up dust, grains of dirt brought in by the dogs and stray pet hair tumbleweed. Its innovative flexible neck makes it incredibly easy to steer and use, further assisted by its two large wheels. The hard floor / carpet switch, placed both side for convenience, brings down stepped nylon bristles that glide across hard surfaces.

For carpets the Turbohead is unbeatable as its fast spinning brush bar agitates dust from the carpet and picks up pet hairs with ease. The action of the brush also stops it sticking down to the carpet too much on full power, although the stiffness of movement does remind you that this is a potent cleaner despite its relatively compact dimensions and 1200W motor.

Both the AirTeQ and the Turbobrush floorheads are very good at cleaning right up to the edge thanks to small air channels in the base of each. It is such a simple yet effective solution we are amazed that more manufacturers do not incorporate this feature. Both brush heads cleaned the test carpet area covered in freshening powder with consummate ease and left precious little residue in just a couple of passes.

There is little faulting Miele’s flexible hose, telescoping tubes and supplied tools either, as all work faultlessly. The reach is easily capable of getting to high cobwebs without lifting the actual cleaner from the floor, and the cleaner’s three small wheels means it follows you around like a sheep on hard floors. The small wheels do struggle a bit on deep carpet compared to models with large wheels but as the Compact C2 is so light, a good tug easily gets it moving.

We found the Compact C2 model slightly quieter than Miele’s C3 models, even though they use the same motor. It produced around 78dB when using the Turbobrush head on carpet and around 75dB with the AirTeQ head on hard floors. Both figures are more than bearable even for an extended cleaning session.

Der Cat & Dog 6000 muss im Gegensatz zum 5000er-Modell mit einer um 200 Watt schwächeren Motorleistung auskommen. Da allerdings viele Besitzer des 5000er-Modells davon berichten, eher selten mit der höchsten Stufe zu saugen, dürften auch die 2.000 Watt des Cat & Dog 6000 eine mehr als zufriedenstellende Saugleistung bieten. Ferner ist der Staubbeutel des 5000er-Modell um einen Liter größer (4,5 statt 3,5 Liter), und bei der Kabelaufwicklung muss man im Falle des Cat & Dog 6000 auf die Tipp-Funktion verzichten.

Alle anderen Komfortfunktionen hingegen sind bei beiden Staubsaugern identisch, das heißt, auch der Cat & Dog 6000 lässt sich einfach lenken, flexibel in der Saugleistung dosieren und in einem Umkreis von zehn Metern einsetzen. Im Preis liegen die beiden Tierhalter-Sauger zwar deutlich über dem Durchschnitt, doch angesichts der Top-Leistung, die sie bieten, sind die rund 230 Euro für den Cat & Dog 6000 ( Amazon ) sowie die 269 Euro für den Cat & Dog 5000 ( Amazon ) gerechtfertigt.

If you hate vacuuming, we've got two words for you: German Engineering.

Visit a Miele showroom and you'll find employees eager to tell you about Miele's vacuum factory in Bielefeld, Germany, and how much effort the company puts into quality control.

You'll notice it the second you vacuum with one: Joints don't creak, handles don't jiggle, and motors purr like brand-new BMWs. Unfortunately, you'll also notice the price tag, which is between five and ten times what your entry-level Hoover or Eureka might cost. Could a vacuum really be worth that much?

In the case of the Miele Dynamic U1 series (MSRP $449–799), we think the answer is yes. Sure, other vacuums clean better and cost less, but none of them feel like a Miele or have the same warranty coverage. If a little bit of luxury is enough to get you off your hintern and clean the floors, it's worth paying a premium.

Despite its heritage, the U1 series is designed specifically for the U.S. market, where upright vacuums rule. (Germans prefer a canister Staubsauger.) Every U1’s controls have excellent tactility, snapping clearly from position to position so there's no mistaking a change in cleaning mode. Handles on top have textured grips with the on-off toggle in easy reach.

Down at the bottom you’ll find a swiveling joint inside the brush head that lets you turn on a dime. A vacuum that pivots means less fatigue, which means you can spend extra time on those carpets before calling it quits.

There are seven discrete models in the Dynamic U1 family, with additional features—at additional cost—as we move through the lineup. The U1 Twist is the best bargain at $449, the U1 Salsa adds a HEPA filter and LED headlights, the Jazz adds a sealed air cleaning system, the Cat & Dog adds a brush for pet hair, the AutoEco has an automatically adjusting motor, and so on. All of this is yours to explore using Miele’s handy comparison tool, but for our money we think the sweet spots are the U1 Cat & Dog and the aforementioned U1 Twist. The Cat & Dog for its handy tools for dealing with hair, and the Twist for the same convenience features and Miele-manufactured motor at a lower price than the rest. (Plus, you can add a HEPA filter for just $40.)

The U1s glide over carpets like they have four-wheel drive, and that is in service to what the Germans call die saugwirkung–the suction. We test dirt pickup on tall and short carpet, and these vacuums excel at cleaning thick, luxurious carpet. The U1s we tested, on average, picked up around 12% more test dirt than the average vacuum from our high-pile carpet in a single pass.

While it's true a certain segment of consumers will always scoff at these kinds of prices for a vacuum, each Dynamic U1 is an investment in quality. Could you buy a month's worth of groceries for $450 or more? Sure. But if you've ever been frustrated by a vacuum that won't move with you, or can't clean out thick carpets, then maybe it's time to experience Miele's meticulous manufacturing for yourself.

Beim Cat & Dog 6000 handelt es sich um einen Staubsauger, bei dem der Hersteller Miele insbesondere Haustierhalter im Blick hat. Im direkten Vergleich zum Cat & Dog 5000 ist er lediglich etwas weniger leistungsstark und geringfügig schlechter ausgestattet, was sich trotzdem kaum negativ auf die Saugleistung niederschlagen dürfte.

Diese wiederum wurde und wird beim Cat & Dog 5000 durch die Bank von den Käufern über die Maßen gelobt. Und natürlich schafft es der Staubsauger tatsächlich, sowohl mit der normalen Saugdüse als auch mit der speziell für Teppiche sowie Hunde- und Katzenhaare gedachten Motorbürste, die haarigen Hinterlassenschaften der tierischen Hausmitbewohner nahezu vollständig zu entsorgen.

Der Cat & Dog 6000 muss im Gegensatz zum 5000er-Modell mit einer um 200 Watt schwächeren Motorleistung auskommen. Da allerdings viele Besitzer des 5000er-Modells davon berichten, eher selten mit der höchsten Stufe zu saugen, dürften auch die 2.000 Watt des Cat & Dog 6000 eine mehr als zufriedenstellende Saugleistung bieten. Ferner ist der Staubbeutel des 5000er-Modell um einen Liter größer (4,5 statt 3,5 Liter), und bei der Kabelaufwicklung muss man im Falle des Cat & Dog 6000 auf die Tipp-Funktion verzichten.

Alle anderen Komfortfunktionen hingegen sind bei beiden Staubsaugern identisch, das heißt, auch der Cat & Dog 6000 lässt sich einfach lenken, flexibel in der Saugleistung dosieren und in einem Umkreis von zehn Metern einsetzen. Im Preis liegen die beiden Tierhalter-Sauger zwar deutlich über dem Durchschnitt, doch angesichts der Top-Leistung, die sie bieten, sind die rund 230 Euro für den Cat & Dog 6000 ( Amazon ) sowie die 269 Euro für den Cat & Dog 5000 ( Amazon ) gerechtfertigt.

Die Gelenkrollen sind sehr leichtgängig und so konstruiert, dass er auch mühelos über kleine Schwellen gezogen werden kann.

Das Stecksystem des Saugrohrs mit Arretierung ist einfach super. (kein Verdrehen. nichts wackelt). In voll ausgefahrender Stellung sehr stabil und auch kein wackeln.

Der Staubsauger ist sehr kompakt, leicht und hat ein schönes schlichtes Design.

Die Bedienung / Tasten funktionieren tadellos.

Die straffe und sehr gut funktionierende Kabelaufwicklung.

Das sehr leise Betriebsgeräusch, auch der Turbobürste (natürlich mit dieser etwas lauter).

Die Turbodüse lässt sich gut öffnen und reinigen.

Der Saugschlauch scheint etwas dünn zu sein, ist aber bisher nicht eingeknickt. Aber naja, haben uns für die Sorglos-Box entschieden, damit 5 Jahre Garantie.

On test: Miele Blizzard CX1 Cat & Dog vacuum cleaner

Features like multiple filters and wireless controls, plus prices in the hundreds of pounds, make choosing a new vacuum cleaner a serious business. E&T checked out the performance of one new high-tech model.

The Blizzard CX1 is Miele's first ever bagless vacuum cleaner. It boasts a unique mono cyclone that its makers claim is quiet, efficient and easy to control – whereas multi-cyclone systems are more a case of all or nothing. These are teamed with class-leading HEPA filtration and British Allergy Foundation approval.

It's available in three iterations: Excellence (£300), Cat & Dog (£350, with a big turbo brush for stubborn hair and dirt) and Comfort (£400, with a parquet floorhead for delicate wood floors and wireless controls so you can adjust the power and even pause from the handle rather than reaching down to the body of the cylinder cleaner). All offer 1200W power. We put the Cat & Dog model through its paces.

It looks a lot like previous models – the same iconic red and a similar shape – but the body of this new, improved cylinder cleaner is considerably heavier. This isn’t a vacuum cleaner to buy for anyone who struggles to lift, unless they live in a flat.

Everything clips together with ease, though: hose, telescopic tube, floorheads, attachments. And what a telescopic tube! It's extra-long and boasts an ‘eco comfort’ handle that makes it ridiculously comfortable in the hand. The handle sits slightly above the hose and feels very light. It's easy to push around the floor thanks to this, as well as the fact that the floorheads are easily manoeuvrable.

The handle confused us at first because it has a ring of bristles around it that we couldn't figure out. It transpired that it's an integral dusting brush that slides down with a quick squeeze, so you don't have to fumble around finding an attachment. There are two further tools – crevice and upholstery – stowed on board at the back of the cleaner. Unlike previous models, you can simply grab them, there's no need to lift a flap to access them.

The body of the cylinder cleaner may be heavy, but it glides with ease on its castors. Move as you clean and it follows along behind with zero effort. It's only when you need to lift it to go up and down stairs that the weight is noticeable.

The 6.5m cord is the same length as previous models and the hose is long enough to give the machine a 10m reach overall. On the stairs you do need to park it a couple of times, but we found it was designed to perch well on a stair – not the case for all cylinder cleaners.

This Cat & Dog version of the Blizzard CX1 comes with three cleaning heads. One is very light and has squeegee-like rubber sides, for hard floors. The second is a standard cleaning head that you can use for hard floors or carpets. The third is of course the powerful turbo brush, designed to lift grime and hair – good not just for pets but also humans.

We were wowed by the amount of dirt the turbo brush picked up. Of course, the dirt you collect is much more visible with a bagless cleaner, but the results really did impress. Our floors were super clean after the Miele effortlessly whizzed over them.

It made quick work of cleaning and in particular it lifted a lot of dirt from rugs that had recently been cleaned with its predecessor. That extra suction from the unique mono-cyclone design clearly works.

The Blizzard CX1's mono-cyclone design takes air flow exceeding 100 km/h and passes it through a single, large cyclone. The theory is that multi-cyclone systems waste power and generate more noise.

We were indeed impressed with the suction and sheer cleaning prowess. Our one criticism while cleaning was that we didn't find it especially quiet. It wasn't unusually loud either, it just didn't live up to the claims of sounding quieter. It's rated at 76dB. By way of comparison, Miele's Complete C3 Silence EcoLine Plus, which was awarded a Quiet Mark, is rated 68dB.

Miele also says that it's much easier to control power levels on a mono-cyclone cleaner than one with lots of smaller cyclones, because the latter only really works at high speeds. This was borne out on test – a knob on the body of the Blizzard CX1 lets you choose from four power levels. And if you go for the Comfort model instead of Cat & Dog you also get radio control buttons on the handle that let you adjust power levels without reaching down.

Every feature seems to have been redesigned for the better. For example, you're supposed to tap a button with your foot to rewind the power cable, but we found that it simply reeled itself back in when required, with no need to push a button. The machine also tells you when its two-litre container needs emptying and turns itself down to its lowest power setting until you do so.

Emptying the dust canister into the bin was fine. There was a little cloud of dust but finer particles are caught by allergy-friendly filters instead. Heavier particles drop to the bottom of the container, while finer dust is caught by pleated Gore CleanStream filter. This has a sensor-controlled, self- cleaning system. From time to time, the machine pauses for 20 seconds and automatically cleans its own filter. Alternatively you can tell it to clean itself – recommended a couple of times a year if the machine is getting such light use that it's not automatically cleaned itself.

It also has a lifetime HEPA filter that retains up to 99.999 per cent of even the smallest particles. As a result, the discharged air is cleaner than normal room air. The vacuumed bacteria, allergens and mold spores remaining safely within the filter for the lifetime of the Blizzard CX1. Thanks to these high levels of filtration, the machine has been given the British Allergy Foundation seal of approval.

In all, we were truly impressed by the Miele Blizzard CX1 Cat & Dog's performance. It doesn't put a foot wrong. The only caveat is its weight. It's light in the hand but the body of the machine is heavy to lift. Put simply: this is not a vacuum cleaner to buy for your gran, unless your gran works out (or lives in a flat).

Aside from that, we recommend it unreservedly. It is at the pricier end of the market, but in this instance you get what you pay for. Also it's cheaper than a Dyson and we felt its cleaning performance was superior.

Miele staubsauger cat & dog

Der Miele Cat & Dog 5000 ist ein leistungsstarker Bodenstaubsauger mit 2200 Watt, die in sechs Stufen in der Saugkraft reguliert werden können.

Der Motor ist mit einem Sanftanlauf ausgestattet, welcher für eine längere Lebensdauer des Gerätes sorgt. Zusätzlich ist die Silence-Funktion enthalten, um die Geräuschentwicklung zu minimieren. Dieser Staubsauger ist mit einem Active Air Clean-Filter ausgestattet, welcher die Raumluft von Staub und anderen Schmutzteilen reinigt und im Gerät einschließt. Zusätzlich werden unangenehme Gerüche durch Aktivkohle neutralisiert.

Ideal sind die Staubbeutel HyClean (Typ G/N), die mit Protector-Netting und 9 Filterlagen ausgestattet sind. Bei diesen Staubbeuteln bleiben selbst Feinstaub und kleinste Partikel im Staubsaugerbeutel. durch den Hygieneverschluss wird der Staubbeutel beim Öffnen des Saugers automatisch verschlossen. Das Protect-Netting, welches den eigentlichen Staubbeutel umgibt, schützt ihn vor Beschädigungen. Der Miele Cat & Dog 5000 Staubsauger verfügt über Laufrollen auf Stahlachsen, welche den Fußboden schonen.

Mit seinem Aktionsradius von 10 Metern sind auch sehr große Räume schnell und ohne Unterbrechung gesäubert. Neben der automatischen Kabelaufwicklung ist auch eine automatische Staubbeutelpositionierung für perfekten Sitz und somit optimalen Ergebnissen vorhanden. Der ergonomische Handgriff sorgt für einen perfekten Halt und das Edelstahl-Teleskoprohr beim Bodenstaubsauger Miele Cat & Dog 5000 kann in die gewünschte Länge gebracht werden. Für kleine Pausen ist das Parksystem entwickelt worden.

Zubehör kann im Gerät selbst verstaut werden. Um eine optimale Saugleistung zu gewährleisten hat Miele eine Anzeige für den Wechsel des Staubbeutels eingebaut. Das Verriegelungssystem für die Bodendüse und den Handgriff sorgt für Sicherheit bei Gebrauch und die Möbel werden durch die rund herum laufende Möbelschutzleiste geschont. Als Zubehör ist beim Miele Cat & Dog 5000 eine umschaltbare Leichlauf-Bodendüse enthalten, die SBD 285-3. Mit ihr kann man sowohl Teppichböden als auch Hartböden perfekt reinigen und benötigt keine große Kraft.

Um auch tief sitzenden Schmutz zu entfernen ist die Turbobürste STB 205-3 dabei. Für die schonende Reinigung der Polstermöbel gibt es die Polsterdüse, für Fugen, Ecken und andere schwer erreichbare Stellen die Fugendüse. Um Bilderrahmen oder andere feine Materialien sicher aber gründlich zu säubern ist ein Saugpinsel mit Naturborsten ebenfalls im Lieferumfang enthalten.
