Die Bewohner des kleinen Ortes Piedmont in den USA, nahe der mexikanischen Grenze, sterben nach Absturz einer Raumsonde eines amerikanischen Regierungsprojektes, einen mysteriösen Tod. Alles Blut im Körper scheint sich in Sekundenschnelle in Staub verwandelt zu haben. Lediglich ein Alkoholiker und ein Säugling können lebend geborgen werden.

Im geheimen, von der Außenwelt isolierten Untergrund-Labor „Steppenbrand“ macht sich ein Team aus Wissenschaftlern und Ärzten daran, die Ursachen für diesen Vorfall zu ergründen.

Die Zeit arbeitet gegen sie. Wenn sie mit nicht schnell Ergebnisse vorweisen können, droht die Regierung mit einem nuklearen Angriff auf das Gefahrengebiet.

In seinem Roman greift Crichton auf eine Vielzahl wissenschaftlicher Literaturnachweise zurück, die zum Teil frei erfunden sind, um dem Buch einen realistischeren Anstrich zu verleihen.

Auf diesen Trick greift auch Wise zurück, wenn er z. B. Blaupausen der Forschungsstation einblendet oder wenn schon zu Beginn des Films der Zuschauer darüber informiert wird, dass er streng geheimes Material zu Gesicht bekommen wird. So entsteht oftmals der Eindruck, als würde es sich bei dem Film um einen Dokumentarfilm handeln oder um die Nachstellung eines realen Ereignisses.

Das tut der Sache jedoch keinen Abbruch. Denn die Rollen sind toll besetzt und gerade in ihrer Zusammenarbeit können die Darsteller überzeugen.

Denn letztlich zieht „Andromeda“ besonders viel seiner Faszination aus dem großartigen Zusammenspiel seiner vier Hauptdarsteller.

Jeder spielt seinen Charakter sehr überzeugend und mit äußerstem Feingefühl für den richtigen Ton.

Besonders hervorzuheben sei hierbei Kate Reid als einziger weiblicher Hauptcharakter (Der in der Romanfassung im Übrigen auch noch männlich war). Sie bringt mit ihrer Darstellung sowohl zynischen Humor als auch ein wenig mehr Menschlichkeit in das Team, das andernfalls aus recht trockenen und analytischen Wissenschaftlern besteht.

Die Ist nämlich von vorne bis hinten stimmig geraten und Douglas Trumbull (Lautlos im Weltraum) konnte sich beim Set Design und den optischen Effekten mal so richtig austoben.

Auffällig sind daneben aber auch die Schnitte, die Wise benutzt. Mal mit hoher Schnittfrequenz beginnend, um dann wieder in lange Einstellungen überzugehen, sind ebenso effektive Wege dem Film einen eigenen Look zu geben, wie auch der Einsatz von Split Screens.

Ich denke allerdings, dass gerade seine starken Charaktere, der sehr eigene Look, ebenso wie seine ganz spezielle Dynamik und narrative Finesse ihn zu einem äußerst sehenswerten Science Fiction Film machen. Den Bogen sollte Wise ja erst Jahre später beim ersten Star Trek Film überspannen.

Hier funktioniert seine Formel aber vortrefflich und so liefern er und sein Team eine tolle Verfilmung der Romanvorlage.

Das Bild ist durchaus gelungen, weist nur zu Beginn des Films einige Unschärfen auf. Hier und dort gibt es leichte Verschmutzungen zu sehen, insgesamt ist der Transfer aber gut gelungen, was sich auch in den kräftigen Farben widerspiegelt.

Ein großartiger Film! Perfekter Sci-Fi, wie man ihn selten gesehen hat. Und in gewisser Weise immer noch zeitgemäß.

Ja, ich war auch sehr begeistert und positiv überrascht. Hatte den Film bis dato auch noch nicht gesehen, was sich als schweres Versäumnis meinerseits herausgestellt hat.

Glücklicherweise hab ich das ja jetzt nachgeholt. :)

Nelson Gidding's adaptation of the Michael Crichton novel is too literal and talky.

Wise does rather plod through the plot.

The first alien invasion could be of a virus. Could be. That's writer Michael Crichton's conjectural basis for this interesting foray into sci-fi. Luckily we here in the good ol' U.S. of A. probably have a super secret underground facility somewhere out in the desert ready to tackle just such a eventuality. Not only is it super secret, it's underground. And in the desert. It's probably run by a super secret computer, too. One that talks. And they can do just about anything there. Betcha. It's this kid-in-the-backyard-gee-whiz kind of wonder that starts this baby up, but too much of a good thing cuts into plot development, don't it . maybe they can remake it.

Wise and Gidding (director and screenwriter) succesfully repeat the formula applied when adapting the psychological horror classic "The Haunting". A concise emphasis in human drama and scientific verosimilitud over a seemingly far-fetched subject. Tense and paranoid atmosphere that grows in its final stages, despite the overload of dialogue. An adrenaline-pounding thriller.

A very serious sci-fi thriller about an alien virus on Earth. Somewhat boring in places, but overall a really good movie.

I've seen this film years ago, but I suppose I'd never really "seen" it. This truly is a science-fiction film like few others. The characters are all played by unknowns and they're all older, unlike some sci-fi films of late which leading scientists in the world are in their mid-20's with personal baggage overshadowing the main star of the film; the virus. The date/time stamps during the film give it a documentary feel here and there which makes the viewer feel as if they are as much in a hurry as the scientists. The electronic score adds to the early 70's sci-fi feel and perfectly compliments the look, and damn does it look cool in only the way director Robert Wise could make it. If you haven't seen this film, rent it, pop some popcorn, draw the blinds and enjoy one of the more interesting science thrillers from the early 1970s.

Plot Summary (4)

When virtually all of the residents of Piedmont, New Mexico, are found dead after the return to Earth of a space satellite, the head of the US Air Force's Project Scoop declares an emergency. Many years prior to this incident, a group of eminent scientists led by Dr. Jeremy Stone advocated for the construction of a secure laboratory facility that would serve as a base in the event an alien biological life form was returned to Earth from a space mission. Stone and his team - Drs. Dutton, Leavitt and Hall - go to the facility, known as Wildfire, and try to first isolate the life form while determining why two people from Piedmont (an old wino and a six-month-old baby) survived. The scientists methodically study the alien life form unaware that it has already mutated and presents a far greater danger in the lab, which is equipped with a nuclear self-destruct device should it manage to escape.

A U.S. Army satellite (Scoop VII) falls to earth near Piedmont, New Mexico. The recovery team experiences difficulties as it becomes clear that the satellite has performed its intended function all too well, and has brought back something from space. A team of scientists is assembled in a high-tech, underground facility to identify and defeat the "enemy" before it is too late.

When the capsule of the Scoop Mission returns to Earth and lands in the small town of Piedmont, it brings an unearthy organism with it. Except a crying baby and an old man with an ulcer, the entire population dies from clotted blood. A team of four scientists - leader Dr. Jeremy Stone, Dr. Charles Dutton, Dr. Mark Hall and Dr. Ruth Leavitt - are summoned and gathered together in the top secret Wildfire facility. Fighting against time, they try to understand the reason why the old man and the baby survived and research an antidote to Andromeda, the ultimate biological weapon.

Michael Crichton was invited to take a tour of Universal Studios during the production of this film. His guide was none other than Steven Spielberg, who went on to adapt Crichton's most successful novel, Jurassic Park (1993).

The Wildfire scientific lab sets cost more than $300,000 to build and were described at the time as "one of the most elaborately detailed interiors ever built."

The germ from space cost $250,000 to create in special effects.

The Central Core set required the digging of a 70-ft.-deep by 40-ft.-wide hole in a soundstage.

When Dr. Stone's wife tells him someone is at the door to see him, he says, "The SDS has arrived, no doubt." "SDS" is an acronym for "Students for a Democratic Society", a protest group active in colleges in the late 1960s.

The computer error "601" occurs because of a system overload while trying simulate Andromeda's growth and mutation. The error number is a reference to the computer overload error of "1202" (exactly double) which occurred on the LEM during the first lunar descent.

Leavitt, in a protest against inserting something to clean out the GI tract, makes the statement about "risked drowning in that foul bath". The book, but not the movie, had the Wildfire Team submerge completely in an antibiotic solution. The scene may have been cut, but Leavitt still makes reference to it in the movie.

Michael Crichton wrote the rough draft for the novel from which this film is adapted while he was still a medical student. He was inspired after a conversation with one of his teachers about the concept of crystal-based life-forms.

Screenwriter Nelson Gidding broached the idea to director Robert Wise that one of the four scientists should be a woman. Wise initially envisioned female character being something like Raquel Welch in Fantastic Voyage (1966) and objected strenuously to the change. However, after Gidding described in detail the character eventually played by Kate Reid, he convinced Wise that it was a positive addition to the story.

The phrase "Let's go back to the rock and see it at four forty" is sampled in the Apollo 440 song "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Dub".

In September, 1972, Universal was exhibiting this on a double bill with Airport (1970) under the tag line "Together On One Great Family Program".

At the plane crash site, the actor who was supposed to call out, "Major Mancheck," fell out of his trailer and broke his leg. He was replaced on the spot with Robert 'Bob' Olen, who did the lines but was never credited for it.

In the novel, the character of Leavitt is a man but is a woman (played by Kate Reid) in the film.

The section of the film where the two scientists are in the town of Piedmont in their suits, is very similar to the opening of The Man from U.N.C.L.E.: The Finny Foot Affair (1964). They were even searching for some kind of biohazard material, too, which had been taken to a local doctor, but in a small town in Scotland, where they also found everyone dead. In the "UNCLE" episode, the biohazard caused rapid aging, which resulted in death.

The monkey was "killed" by being placed in a large set filled with carbon dioxide. When the monkey's cage, which contained oxygen, was opened the animal was rendered unconscious by the CO2. An assistant director was off camera and brought a breathing apparatus to the monkey, who recovered immediately.

Robert Wise brings his Academy Award-winning sobriety and meticulousness to a pulp tale that cries out for the slapdash vigor of a Roger Corman.

Nelson Gidding's adaptation of the Michael Crichton novel is too literal and talky.

Wise does rather plod through the plot.

Nothing very exciting goes on.

Splendid entertainment that will get you worried about whether they'll be able to contain that strange blob of alien green crystal.

Robert Wise's version of Chrihton's popular novel is a decent (but no more) film, with some good art design.

The first alien invasion could be of a virus. Could be. That's writer Michael Crichton's conjectural basis for this interesting foray into sci-fi. Luckily we here in the good ol' U.S. of A. probably have a super secret underground facility somewhere out in the desert ready to tackle just such a eventuality. Not only is it super secret, it's underground. And in the desert. It's probably run by a super secret computer, too. One that talks. And they can do just about anything there. Betcha. It's this kid-in-the-backyard-gee-whiz kind of wonder that starts this baby up, but too much of a good thing cuts into plot development, don't it . maybe they can remake it.

Wise and Gidding (director and screenwriter) succesfully repeat the formula applied when adapting the psychological horror classic "The Haunting". A concise emphasis in human drama and scientific verosimilitud over a seemingly far-fetched subject. Tense and paranoid atmosphere that grows in its final stages, despite the overload of dialogue. An adrenaline-pounding thriller.

A very serious sci-fi thriller about an alien virus on Earth. Somewhat boring in places, but overall a really good movie.

I've seen this film years ago, but I suppose I'd never really "seen" it. This truly is a science-fiction film like few others. The characters are all played by unknowns and they're all older, unlike some sci-fi films of late which leading scientists in the world are in their mid-20's with personal baggage overshadowing the main star of the film; the virus. The date/time stamps during the film give it a documentary feel here and there which makes the viewer feel as if they are as much in a hurry as the scientists. The electronic score adds to the early 70's sci-fi feel and perfectly compliments the look, and damn does it look cool in only the way director Robert Wise could make it. If you haven't seen this film, rent it, pop some popcorn, draw the blinds and enjoy one of the more interesting science thrillers from the early 1970s.
