It remains exciting: Saturday // Techno // STAUB // X-Mas
A party where lineups are a thing of the past and techno is left to its devices narrating a musical journey.

My research interest focuses on how our built environment shapes and is shaped by our understanding of culture. This interest leads me to examine not just what we build but also how we get there: design processes and their social implications, the economic, ecological and and social sustainability of architecture and urban systems, interpretations of private and public spaces, architectural ethics understood as questions of power and empowerment, and how social class or gender shapes our expectations for the use of space.
My new book, to be published in the Spring of 2018 by Routledge as an edited volume, looks at “modernity” in various cultural contexts, how this concept is expressed spatially through architecture and urban form, and how this has affected women in their everyday lives. Modernity in architecture and urbanism has been seen as a cycle of “creative destruction” associated with an idealized masculinity; in 22 chapters the book uses the lens of gender to explore how broader definitions of cultural modernity have intersected with this concept of physical and social renewal, and if such definitions can be considered socially sustainable.
My 2015 book, Conflicted Identities: Housing and the Politics of Cultural Representation, is an examination of how political and cultural processes shape our built environment. In this work, I examine how nation states use officially sanctioned architecture to create a national identity that often diverges greatly from an identity represented by the vast realm of domestic space defined largely by those who occupy it. Using West Germany of the 1950s and 1960s as a case study, I examine how public architecture expressed an ubiquitous modernity and a rapid break from a tainted past, while domestic architecture expressed the Federal Republic’s often contentious path towards social renewal. In my examinations, I combine several methods of analysis, including interpretations of plans, photographs and films, analysis of historical texts and proceedings, and analysis based on class-based and feminist theory.
As a member of the Department of Architecture’s Culture, Society and Space (CSS) Research Cluster, I have supervised research projects that have examined cultural aspects of housing and urban spaces in countries as diverse as the United States, Russia, Germany, China, India, Turkey, and Iran. With experience as a professional architect and as a researcher, I teach a third-year design studio course in the professional B.Arch program as well as a research methods course and a course in architectural ethics at the graduate level.
I enjoy the lively exchange of ideas that one finds at conferences and professional meetings, and have presented and published my work at such meetings internationally. I have received research and teaching grants including a Penn State President’s Fund for Undergraduate Research Grant in 2016, a College of Arts and Architecture Faculty Research Grant in 2015, and a Raymond A. Bowers Grant in 2013. I have received external grants for my work from the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., the German Academic Exchange Service, and the German Research Foundation.
I received my Ph.D. at the Brandenburg Technical University (BTU) at Cottbus, Germany and my architecture degree at the University of the Arts in Berlin, Germany. Before that, I completed my undergraduate work in Psychology at Barnard College of Columbia University in New York. I practiced architecture in Berlin and worked as a junior faculty member at the BTU Cottbus before joining Penn State in 2001.

Mats Staub (*1972, Muri near Berne, Switzerland) lives and works in Berlin and at the developement places of his long term projects. He studied theater studies, journalism and religious studies in Berne, Fribourg and Berlin (lic. phil. hist). He worked as a journalist for various publications (1996–2001) and as a dramatic advisor at the Neumarkt Theater in Zurich (2002–2004). Since 2004 he develops his own art projects at the intersections between theater and exhibition, literature and science.
Mats Staub is a traveller through the realms of memory. His long term projects grow incrementally from place to place. So, for example, he has interviewed over three hundred people in fourteen cities about what they know about their grandparents. The continually expanding audio installation «My Grandparents | Memory Bureau» has been presented by a wide cross-section of institutions, including Theater Basel (2008), the Wiener Festwochen in Vienna (2009), the Musée d’art moderne et contemporain in Geneva (2010) and the Historisches Museum in Frankfurt (2012).
In the video installation «21 – Memories of Growing Up» he has created portraits of people from very different generations in the moment of recalling their experiences from when they were 21 years old. This installation also grows as it travels from city to city and is continually presented in new forms, for example at the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm in Frankfurt (2012), the Museum of Communication Berne (2013), Kunstfest Weimar (2014), the Wiener Festwochen in Vienna (2015) and at the international documentary film festival Encounters in Cape Town (2017).
«Ten Important Events in My Life» is the first of Mats Staub’s long-term projects to create life stories on the internet – since 2017 it has also been running in Spanish under the title «Diez momentos en mi vida».

«This is the transcendent aspect of the project '21': it breaks the boundaries of race, class and culture and it allows people who have grown up in disparate parts of the world and sometimes in vastly different circumstances to feel a deep connection with another human being.»
«Astonishing moments of direct emotion conveyed through facial expressions: with his numerous projects Mats Staub is developing a form of artistic anthropology that science cannot achieve. This fabulous work is worth visiting again and again. Definitely.»

Unlike cities where reliable club nights are in short supply, Berlin has the opposite problem. One could easily go to a different event every day for months at a time, but with so many options on the menu, it can be hard to choose. Here are ten of our favourite parties on offer.
Started in Paris in 2005 by a trio of Detroit and Chicago house lovers, J.A.W. set their sights on Berlin a few years ago and have been throwing top-notch parties ever since. They’ve brought in Sadar Bahar, Floating Points, Robert Glasper – and of course, more than one night with Theo Parrish, whose last appearance at Prince Charles over the summer was one of the best parties in recent memory – due in no small part to a packed room of joyous, enthusiastic people. With great bookings, great crowds don’t always follow, but they sure seem to with J.A.W. nights, which boast some of the most deep, soulful, and jazzy sounds that can be heard anywhere in Berlin. Tack soul food and a record fair onto the beginning of the night, and it’s a combination which can’t be beat.
Friday nights at Berghain don’t tend to be very exciting. Generally speaking, only Panorama Bar is open, and one room of music doesn’t offer much in the way of options. Six years back, things were shaken up with the introduction of a new night downstairs, Leisure System, which featured the sort of bookings that surely inspired a lot of head-scratching from the P-Bar crowd. This quarterly party in Berghain takes place concurrently with whatever’s going on upstairs (usually a standard Finest Friday lineup) and favours somewhat more unconventional, challenging electronic music – straight-forward, 4/4 this is decidedly not. Tessela, Venetian Snares, Andy Stott, Holly Herndon, and Special Request are among those who have played in the last year alone. In asking audiences to reconsider what constitutes typical club music, Leisure System consistently fulfills the promise of showcasing artists who are not only technically excellent, but interesting too.
Forget “best gay party” in Berlin, many will say that it’s the best party, period. Homopatik takes place at ://about blank on the third Friday of each month and runs for close to 24 hours, though for special occasions, it can stretch out through Sunday. The night is organised by a group of Italians, with Mr. Ties at the helm. He’s incredibly active behind the decks and weaves together long, high-energy sets that feature tunes from every corner of house, techno, disco, and pop. Beyond his inevitable appearance, the lineup is always a surprise, and we like it that way.
4. Grounded Theory
What started in 2009 as a mere party has become the undisputed king of quality techno in Berlin. Pretty much everyone who’s anyone has played at Grounded Theory, which takes place 5-6 times annually, since its inception: Function, Surgeon, Perc, Sigha, Shifted, Answer Code Request, the list goes on. Even Ben Klock and Marcel Dettmann, who rarely play sets in this city away from their home turf in Berghain, have played at Grounded Theory nights. Native to Arena Club, more recent years have seen the event held at Stattbad, but either way, it’s solid techno from midnight until well into the next morning.
This Berlin label has been a platform for a modest but consistent stream of no-nonsense, quality techno for the last couple of years. It was actually born out of a club night though, which began in 2009, three years prior to the first Dystopian release. It’s somewhat ironic to dub this party “dystopian,” because some would definitely consider the atmosphere at these nights to be the epitome of paradise. Like Grounded Theory, this party also uses Arena Club as a home base. Rødhåd and Alex.Do play at nearly all of the Dystopian nights, with very regular appearances from Recondite, Vril, Felix K, and a rotating cast of other friends too. This is forward-thinking industrial techno par excellence.
There is one event which happens on Fridays at Berghain that’s special, despite there being no option to descend the stairs from Panorama Bar and hear other music. That night is when Zip, a seriously unsung hero of house, takes to the decks. It’s always a treat to experience the Perlon founder in action: his knack for track selection is as drool-worthy as his mixing is tight, and these sensibilities contribute to seriously timeless and dynamic sets. He and Sammy Dee have co-hosted and curated Get Perlonized! on the first Friday of every month since Berghain opened, and after ten years, it’s a club night which is still worth getting excited about. Get Perlonized! succeeds in creating an atmosphere which is exceptional, and a trend that will hopefully continue for years to come.
7. Snax Club / F.C. Snax United
Berghain’s Lab.oratory combines fetish with techno all-year round, often with serious specificity, as the programme on their website indicates. Snax is less specific with regard to the fetish aspect of things – it’s really an anything-goes kind of affair – but still very much a special event because of the venue. Men-only sex parties in the Lab are typically limited to the Lab, but on the twice-annual occasion of Snax, the Berghain floor is open too (note that there’s a separate entrance for Panorama Bar on these weekends, where men who aren’t into Snax and women are welcome.) The first is over Easter weekend, simply called Snax Club, and the second happens in late autumn, the sportswear-themed F.C. Snax United. There is separate music happening in each area of the club, and programming doesn’t take a backseat to other activities either: it’s normal to see the likes of Boris, nd_baumecker, Answer Code Request, and Steffi, plus plenty of non-Ostgut DJs too, with recent editions including Efdemin, Massimilliano Pagliara, and Gerd Janson. The Lab is unrivaled as a sex club, both due to its facilities and the uninhibited crowd it attracts, and Snax parties provide a chance for this crowd to enjoy things a little more thoroughly.
OHM, the avant-garde little brother of the Tresor family, has a decidedly more experimental policy than most Berlin clubs. The Contort series, run by Hayley and Samuel Kerridge and hosted at OHM, maintains this trend, existing as a free, daytime event where left-field electronic music – think IDM, ambient, and experimental techno – has found a regular home. It’s relatively laid-back, and a great way to spend a few hours on a Sunday. The idea is to take artists out of the typical club environment and give them a chance to do something different with sound, so A/V performances, live experimentation, and art installations are Contort’s bread and butter. They’ve hosted Bill Kouligas, Cristian Vogel, and Ed Davenport over the last few years, but the likelihood of discovering new and exciting artists is perhaps the best part about going to one of these parties.
A great pairing if there ever was one. With so many solid house and techno nights happening on a regular basis, it can sometimes be hard to remember that there are any other types of music on offer. That’s why we’re thankful for the reminder which comes in the form of Burgers & Hip Hop, held at Prince Charles. This is an opportunity for local restaurants and food vendors to whip out delicious, juicy burgers – and not ho-hum burgers either, they’re creatively done, and absolutely worth the lines. Grills are fired up in the afternoon and it’s all about food (and drinks,) with music more or less in the background. From around 10pm though, the focus shifts to music: think a house party vibe, but with a crowd of people who actually want to dance. You’ll hear a mix of familiar hip hop and R&B, with some old-school rap thrown in for good measure.
Parties with secret lineups can get off the ground easily enough, but may struggle to earn the respect of discerning Berliners who can be somewhat blasé when it comes to clubbing anyway. Everything has to start somewhere though, and Staub (no relation to the Giegling sub-label but it’s no less underground) is well on its way to becoming a staple for those in-the-know. In this case, “secret” isn’t code for “weak as a result of lazy and uninspired bookings.” Along with a few friends, the two guys behind I/Y – one of the more exciting contemporary techno outfits in Berlin – organise this daytime party at ://about blank, which happens about every month. It’s perhaps surprisingly well-attended for a daytime event with no lineup announcement, but that only speaks to the organisers’ refined taste in techno.

Dear Uncle Joe and family,
You are in my thoughts and prayers. We will keep fond memories of Aunt Sue in our hearts. her love for crafts and her laughter will echo in our hearts forever.
My only promise that I need to have made clear is that Uncle Joe, you will get better from the cancer yourself. At my mom's funeral you said you would walk me down the isle if I got better and beat the lupus/chemotherapy that I was

My only promise that I need to have made clear is that Uncle Joe, you will get better from the cancer yourself. At my mom's funeral you said you would walk me down the isle if I got better and beat the lupus/chemotherapy that I was dealing with! I have and now I am passing the ball back in your court!
Love, your niece Kayla Marie Staub

Hey Cousin Joe. The years have passed us all by and I am not even sure you remember who I am. You always made an impression every time you came to Maine. Miss you greatly and want you to know how sorry I am to hear of your loss. Our thoughts and prayers from all your cousins in Maine. We love you. Faye (Uncle Ed's daughter)

Sue was a good friend to many and she will be missed by all. Her friendly, positive and pleasant attitude were an inspiration to us. She treated everyone as if she had known them for years. The relationship she and Joe shared was fantastic. We are better people for having known and worked with her.

I am having a hard time since your passing, but I am grateful that you are no longer in pain. I remember summer days full of hanging laundry on the clothesline, painting shirts, making snow globes, the kitchen when the cows had taken over, going to ceramic classes, exploring for sale houses, days swimming in the river (when it used to be clean) and most of all your love.
