Advanced SpinFlow ™ Power Clean
Picks up more of the stuff that lands on the floor—like dirt, cereal, dust bunnies, and crumbs.
Exclusive to Botvac Connected: Two cleaning modes—Eco mode and Turbo mode—Eco is a quieter, longer energy saving clean; Turbo delivers a super-powered clean with maximum pickup.
D Shape with CornerClever ™ Tech
Neato Robot Vacuum
Neato cleans within 14mm of the walls and corners.
Neato’s D-shape allows for a front-brush design with a 50% bigger brush than the competition. Gets closer to walls and into corners—and makes room for Neato’s extra–large dirt bin. Round robot vacuums simply are not up to the task.
Other Robot Vacuums
Round robots are 98mm away from the walls—and even further from corners.
Round vacs have their brushes in the middle, between the wheels. Not much room for a decent size brush. And the dirt bin? It’s small, too. Botvac robot vacuums have larger dirt bins allowing you to empty them less frequently.

Neato Botvac Connected
Wi-Fi-enabled. Well-designed app. Powerful suction.
Pricey. Quirky setup process.
The Neato Botvac Connected is a bit expensive, but if you're looking for a robotic vacuum you can control with your smartphone, it's the one to buy.
How much are you willing to pay for convenience? The $699 Neato Botvac Connected robot vacuum costs significantly less than the iRobot Roomba 980 , though neither is what you'd call a bargain. That said, the Botvac Connected shares a lot in common with the uber-pricey Roomba 980: Both vacuums feature built-in Wi-Fi for app control with your smartphone, both are easy to use, with good mapping systems, and, most importantly, both take care of just about all your household vacuuming chores for you. The Roomba 980 is slightly smaller, but the Botvac Connected is a better value.

In stark contrast to the circular Roomba 980, the Botvac uses a "D" shape to get into corners better. Only the back end is curved, which also contains an exhaust vent and two metal strips used to charge the vacuum when it's docked in its charging base. It measures 3.9 by 12.7 by 13.2 (HWD) inches, making it slightly taller than the Roomba 980 (3.6 inches), which can make a difference if you have TV stands or couches that sit low to the floor. There's a handle on the front chassis so you can easily pick the vacuum up and move it from room to room. You'll also find a 1.7-by-1.7-inch LCD panel, four programming buttons, a large Home button, and a Spot Clean button on top of the device.
The LCD is home to some valuable information, including various indicators for battery life, cleaning mode (Turbo, the most powerful suction level; or Eco, for a quieter clean and longer runtime), whether you have a schedule set, and Wi-Fi status. The Home and Spot Clean buttons also indicate whether the battery is fully charged or not. You can use the programmable buttons on the side of the LCD to scroll through settings and configure the Botvac without the use of the app.
The bottom of the vacuum contains a single 10.9-inch brush/blade combo roller, left and right drop sensors that prevent it from falling down stairs, two main wheels that help it drive, and a spinning side brush. During testing, the Botvac's spinning brush occasionally dislodged from its magnetic placement after bumping into furniture.
You'll find the vacuum, a spare blade roller, a spare filter, and a manual in the box. You'll also an find 80-inch boundary marker, which is basically magnetic tape you can cut with a pair of scissors to create custom borders for your home. There is no physical remote control, but you can use your smartphone.
The Botvac uses a 4,200mAh lithium-ion battery that requires 180 minutes to fully recharge. It lasts up to 90 minutes in Turbo mode, or up to 120 minutes in Eco mode. That should be enough to clean a whole apartment, or one floor of a house.
Setup, App, and Control
Connecting the Botvac to a Samsung Galaxy S6 proved to be a bit cumbersome. First, you need to download the free Neato app from the Apple App Store or Google Play. It's compatible with Apple devices running iOS 7 through iOS 9, or Android devices running Android 4.0 or later. You then need to plug in the docking station and make sure the vacuum is connected and charging. After that, you can just follow the app's instructions to pair the Botvac with your Wi-Fi network, though it took a few tries in my testing.
The Botvac's LCD said it was hooked up to my home Wi-Fi network, but the app wouldn't connect. I tried turning both the phone and the vacuum on and off, to no avail. Eventually I turned my phone's Bluetooth and Location settings off, tried connecting again, and it worked. Those settings shouldn't make a difference in connecting to the Botvac, but I'd keep them in mind if you have trouble getting started.
Once connected, Neato's app is very easy to use, thanks to an appealing and simple design. The main screen displays a list of your potential fleet of vacuum 'bots, and a + icon allows you to connect new ones. Otherwise, there's just one vacuum on the list designated by a swatch with the vacuum's name, status, battery life, and an icon in the corner you can tap to access settings (where you can edit the robot's name and configure a schedule).
Tap anywhere else and you'll go to the next screen, where you can press a big Play icon that will activate the vacuum. Tapping the gear icon in the upper right corner will let you choose Eco or Turbo mode. Tapping the bottom area of the screen accesses another page with more cleaning modes, like the default Clean House that maps and cleans each room in a home; Clean Spot, which cleans a specific area; and Manual Clean, which lets you guide the vacuum wherever you want. You can also return the vacuum to it starting place or stop the 'bot and end its cleaning cycle.
Performance and Conclusions
When you're ready to clean, all you need to do is press the aforementioned Play icon in the app, or you can press the Home button on the Botvac itself. It's probably a good idea to clear the way for it first, by moving small items like shoes, socks, and toys out of the way; they won't trip the vacuum up, but you also don't want them getting dragged around.
By default, the Botvac starts in default house cleaning mode, moving in parallel lines until it cleans everything within an area and then moves on. You can also have it Spot Clean, which makes the vacuum concentrate on a smaller area (about four-by-six feet). However, I rarely used that feature due to the tiny size of my one bedroom apartment.
In my testing, it took about an hour for the Botvac to clean my place, which consists of a bathroom, bedroom, dining area, entrance hall, and a living area. It took the Roomba 980 about 90 minutes for it to clean the same space, but it did two cleaning passes in that time as opposed to the Neato's one. Despite this, the Neato still managed to pick up a ton of unseen dust and dirt that, much to my dismay, covered my hardwood floors. It picked up some big clumps of dust from underneath my TV stand, but it got stuck in the process. An area like this is where those boundary markers can come in handy.
Besides that, the Botvac performed admirably. It sucked up nearly every dry cat food pellet spilled on the floor by my two cats. And the Botvac is slightly quieter than the Roomba 980. It's still noisy, but it's a softer kind of white noise that dissipates more readily as it moves farther away.
Robot vacuums are expensive, and Wi-Fi-connected robot vacuums are even more expensive. That's just a fact you must accept if you want one. Of the two available, iRobot's Roomba 980 is a bit smaller and sleeker. But the Neato Botvac Connected works just as well, and costs $200 less, which makes the price of convenience a bit easier to swallow. So if you're looking for a connected robot vacuum, we recommend the Botvac. That said, the $449 Neato XV Signature Pro remains our Editors' Choice. It gives you much of the same powerful, automated cleaning power, minus the advantage of smartphone control.
Neato Botvac Connected
Bottom Line: The Neato Botvac Connected is a bit expensive, but if you're looking for a robotic vacuum you can control with your smartphone, it's the one to buy.

Samsung PowerBot VR9000
The pricey PowerBot isn't quite a clean sweep
The Good Though it didn't beat them outright, the PowerBot VR9000 kept up with Neato and Roomba in our tests, and it bests them both with its slate of unique features, including a killer point-cleaning feature.
The Bad The PowerBot lacks a side-sweeping brush to help it clean along walls, and it wasn't quite as sharp a navigator as Neato.
The Bottom Line Top-of-the-line models from Roomba and Neato each clean better than the PowerBot while costing hundreds less. We're sticking with those.
Full Review
We first spotted the Samsung PowerBot VR9000 robot vacuum last year in Berlin, at the IFA consumer electronics and home appliances trade show. At the time, it was pitched as a high-end addition to Samsung's Asian and European lineups (it costs £700 at Argos in the UK -- in Australia, it sells for AU$1,499). This year, it's available in Best Buys across the US for $1,000.
As you might expect from such a costly cleaner, the PowerBot has a few unique tricks up its sleeve, including the ability navigate to whatever spot you're pointing the remote at. It also offers satisfying cleaning performance -- but it wasn't quite able to best the top models from Roomba and Neato, each of which cost hundreds less. That makes it tough to recommend, and tougher still when you consider that a new generation of robot vacuums -- including a high-end model from Dyson -- might be just around the corner. I say wait for one of those, or go with something less expensive.
Design and features
The Samsung PowerBot isn't shy about showing off its hardware. The shiny "CycloneForce" suction system is the centerpiece: a copper-colored turbine that sits next to the translucent, centrifugal bin. The intention is clear -- Samsung wants you to be fully aware of what's going on under the hood. It's a page straight out of the Dyson playbook, and the practical benefit is that you can see when the bin is full, or when there's a clog.
